Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant that is unique because it can work as an antioxidant in both water- and fat-soluble parts of the cell and cell membrane. It also has the ability to recycle other antioxidants including Vitamins C and E, CoQ10 and glutathione. It also has the ability to remain active once it neutralizes free radicals.
ALA has several roles in the body, including the extraction of energy from food and the chelation of metals including cadmium, copper, iron, lead, mercury and others.
Alpha-lipoic acid is believed to be effective in treating cardiovascular disease, diabetes (by preventing glycation), strokes, gangrene, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and retinal degeneration.
Double-blind clinical trials in humans have demonstrated that ALA reduces symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, improves lipid levels, insulin sensitivity, blood sugar control, cardiovascular health and nerve function.
Studies have also shown beneficial effects in slowing down the aging process, particularly in the brain. ALA has been shown to improve mental function in elderly subjects and in a study in patients with Alzheimer's disease, ALA was found to dramatically slow the progression rate of Alzheimer's disease compared to untreated patients or patients receiving standard treatment.
Pre-clinical studies indicate that ALA may help to boost metabolism, promote the burning of fat as energy, reduce food intake, and therefore, potentially aid in weight loss.
