Progesterone is a steroid hormone most often associated with pregnancy but it has many other uses as well. One of its uses is as an estrogen antagonist. Since our environment is full of xenoestrogens (“foreign,” not produced by the body) from plastics, fertilizers and other toxins that end up in the water, air and food supply, many people exhibit signs of estrogen dominance. Hot flashes, night sweats, PMS, infertility and polycystic ovaries can be the result of too much estrogen, as can moodiness, trouble sleeping, water retention and even some thyroid problems. Men may develop breasts as a result of xenoestrogens. Progesterone may be of use because it opposes excess estrogens.
Just before and during menopause, a woman’s progesterone drops to almost nothing although she continues to produce 40% to 50% of the estrogen produced during child-bearing years. Therefore progesterone supplementation may be crucial for older women. Osteoblasts (bone-building cells) actually have progesterone receptors on them and progesterone stimulates production of bone tissue. Women with low progesterone levels are at risk for osteoporosis. It can be helpful for menopausal woman with vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, decreased libido or “brain fog.” In addition, progesterone may help with post-menopausal hair loss and it can even help diminish wrinkles and improve the look of the skin.
Younger woman may also benefit from supplemental progesterone. It can help alleviate PMS, amenorrhea, menorrhagia and endometriosis and may even help with infertility. It is can be useful for excessive hair growth and skin problems such as acne, psoriasis, seborrhea and rosacea, depending on the cause. And for men, progesterone may help stimulate regrowth of hair in men with male pattern baldness.
Other Benefits of Progesterone
Cardiovascular benefits of progesterone include decreased risk of heart attack, hypertension, atherosclerosis and other types of cardiovascular disease. Progesterone has a beneficial effect on serum triglyceride levels and may increase beneficial HDL cholesterol while lowering elevated LDL cholesterol.
Progesterone can help increase energy and promote healthy weight through its influence on the utilization of adipose tissue (body fat) for energy production. It also concentrates in the brain and influences the nervous system by facilitating the production and maintenance of myelin sheaths. It helps to restore normal sleep cycles and improve concentration and may be useful for depression, especially post-partum depression which is believed to result from the dramatic drop in progesterone levels following childbirth. It may also be useful for migraine headaches and irritability.
