Carnosine is a dipeptide composed of the amino acids histamine and alanine. It is concentrated in the muscles and brain but is also found in the heart, kidneys and other organs. It supports cellular rejuvenation and healthy aging in two ways. First, carnosine can deactivate substances involved in the glycation process which impairs cellular function and accelerates aging and is implicated in age-related chronic diseases of the cardiovascular and nervous systems, to name a few. Secondly, carnosine is an antioxidant that protects against free-radical damage and stabilizes cell membranes.
Carnosine is necessary for normal development and functioning of the muscles, brain, heart, liver, kidneys and other organs, it counteracts the deleterious effects of aging on the body (via the cells) and it may be useful for treating the nerve damage, eye problems like cataracts and kidney problems resulting from diabetes. In addition, carnosine has extended the lives of lab mice by up to 20%.
