Our bodies require 13 different vitamins to stay healthy. More than half of them (eight) are the water-soluble B-complex vitamins, which function as coenzymes and work synergistically with other nutrients. They are required for a wide variety of essential metabolic processes and physiological reactions in almost all parts of our bodies including support for adrenal and liver function, converting food into energy, making red blood cells and maintaining healthy nervous and immune systems. B-complex vitamins are also necessary for metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates and much, much more.
Our need for B-vitamins increases when we are pregnant or nursing, suffering from illness, under stress (physical or emotional) or recovering from surgery. As our bodies age we become less able to absorb nutrients, so B-complex supplementation is especially important for the elderly. Since the body does not store most B-vitamins, we need to consume them daily. In addition, they are destroyed by heat from cooking and food processing.
Since they work together as a unit, it is best to take B-complex vitamins together. Increased doses of single B-vitamins may be added for therapeutic effects. They have low toxicity, even in high doses, but if you have a medical condition, please consult your qualified health care professional to learn what’s right for you. See our information on individual B-vitamins to learn more about them.
