Biotin (Vitamin B7) is a coenzyme required for the optimal functioning of enzymes that are involved in a wide variety of physiological processes. Biotin helps the body to produce energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins and is necessary for tissue regeneration. Biotin is also necessary for healthy hair, skin and nails.
Biotin may be useful for improving glucose tolerance in people with Diabetes Type 2 because it helps insulin control blood glucose levels and is involved in glucose uptake into muscle tissue. Biotin also enhances the glucose supporting ability of chromium.
Some research indicates that biotin supplementation may be useful for people who experience nervous system disorders as a result of hemodialysis.
Biotin is needed to make keratin (the primary protein of hair and nails) and can help strengthen brittle nails and hair and could possibly be helpful for some types of baldness.
Deficiency can result in skin disease such as seborrheic dermatitis, hair loss, intestinal tract disorders, high cholesterol and nervous system impairment. Although biotin deficiency is uncommon, people who consume large amounts of raw eggs, people with intestinal disorders or those on long-term antibiotic treatment may be at risk.
