Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) has been in use for thousands of years and has been used in the religious rituals of many of the world’s religions. Its name literally means “pure incense.” It has the quality of slowing and deepening the breath thus promoting relaxation and calmness conducive to prayer and meditation.
It has a fresh, clear, spicy, woody, somewhat camphorous aroma. Although frankincense is a base note it has a citrusy top note and it has been highly valued in perfumery since ancient times.
Frankincense, also known as olibanum and boswellia, has a particular affinity for the respiratory system. It is a pulmonary antiseptic that calms coughs and is useful for bronchitis. Obviously, inhalations are a good way to use frankincense for lung ailments, but massage and baths can also be helpful. It is especially good for anxiety-induced asthma because it is calming and enhances deep breathing. For asthma, though, massage is best since the heat of a steam inhalation may exacerbate the problem.
Frankincense is also beneficial for the urogenital tract and has been used to treat infections in this area. It is also a uterine tonic and a gentle massage on the abdomen can help with heavy periods.
Frankincense calms the emotions and balances mood swings.
Traditionally frankincense has been used for skin care, especially for mature and dry skin. It has a tonic effect and restores tone to sagging skin while diminishing wrinkles.
